Cadaveric Organ Transplantation at GMCH

Successful Cadaveric Organ Transplantation at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital

In a landmark achievement for medical science in Northeast India, Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) has successfully completed a cadaveric kidney transplant on June 8, 2024. It benefitted two renal failure patients with a new lease of life.

The intricate procedure took place within GMCH’s state-of-the-art Super Specialty Wing, under the meticulous supervision of departments of Urology, Nephrology, Anaesthesiology and critical care. This achievement not only signifies a major breakthrough in organ donation and transplantation capabilities within the region but also underscores the critical role of collaborative healthcare initiatives.

The catalyst for this noble cause was the late Mr. Parag Gogoi, identified as a Brain Stem Death (BSD) patient. Sensitively counselled by ROTTO, GMCH ICU doctors, and dedicated transplant coordinators. The family of Mr. Gogoi played a pivotal role in consenting to organ retrieval for the consent and completion of all requisite medical and legal formalities under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA). The transplant surgery was successfully performed, offering renewed hope of life to two recipients, who were in urgent need of kidney transplantations.
